About Us

” We believe in empowering everyone – people of all skin colours, body shapes, ages, sexualities, genders, backgrounds and abilities to enjoy the healing power of cold water and community. Join us for a chat on the beach, a litter pick, a paddle or a swim in the shallows. We are an easy-going group that prefers short dips to long distances and puts companionship before competitive swimming.”

Rachel Ashe,

Founder

Rachel Ashe founded Mental Health Swims in 2019. After receiving a mental illness diagnosis, trying new activities and joining new groups felt even more daunting than normal to Rachel, but on a New Years’ Day in Scotland, she found the courage to join a local group for a quick cold dip.

This dip gave such a positive effect on her mental health that she decided to start her own monthly swim meet at her local beach, focusing on making groups as welcoming and inclusive as possible to those struggling with mental health challenges. This is how Mental Health Swims came to life.
